Solo Violin Recital

Joshua Peckins, Violin

BACH - SOLO PARTITA NO 1 IN B MINOR

ODALINE DE LA MARTINEZ - ASONANCIAS

SHIRISH KORDE - VAK

ERNST - DER ERLKÖNIG

With spoken commentary about the composers and music.

This “Music Speaks” program takes listeners on a whirlwind tour of musical styles, cultures, and time periods, from the glorious Baroque dances of Bach’s b minor Partita to Odaline de la Martinez’s stunning "Asonancias,” from Ernst’s fiendishly difficult variations on a theme by Schubert to Shirish Korde’s memorizing “Vak” for violin and drone. In addition to performing these wonderful pieces, violinist Joshua Peckins will introduce the composers and their music with spoken word, welcoming the audience into a rich experience of the music.

Ernst, a contemporary of Paganini, wrote “Erlkönig” - the "Elf King" - based on the music by Schubert and famous poem by Goethe - it tells the story of a father's and son's flight from the evil Elf King, and contains all the demonic virtuosity and excitement you would expect from such a tale! “Asonancias,” in composer Odaline de la Martinez’s own words, “is a Spanish poetic term for vowel rhyming... I have interpreted it as a kind of multiple variations, where the material is seen as one would view a diamond…” Shirsh Korde is celebrated for “integrating and synthesizing music of diverse cultures into breathtaking works of complex expressive layers.” (Musical America) His piece “Vak” brings an ancient Indian raga to the violin, accompanied by a beguiling drone chord!
