What is “Songs of Loss and hope?”
Songs of Loss and Hope is a virtual concert - a 45 minute digital performance recorded and produced by Joshua Peckins - featuring an engaging mix of solo violin performance and spoken word. The musical selections and commentary explore the topic: what is the role of art and music in a time of loss? At a time when we cannot gather in person, “Songs of Loss and Hope” allows us to congregate virtually and experience the emotional and healing power of music.
The film includes Baroque dances from J. S. Bach’s Partita in d minor, the exquisite song of lament and gratitude “Kaddisch” by Ravel, and the virtuosic new piece “Rhapsody No. 1” by living composer Jessie Montgomery.
Joshua Peckins introduces the music with historical context and engaging stories about the composers, and presents a deeply personal vision for how art and music can help us heal and bring us hope in a time of loss.

HOw does the technology work?
Songs of Loss and Hope is recorded in high-definition video with professional audio. The film can be streamed on most Internet-connected devices, including computers, tablets, and phones.
As a hosting institution, you will receive a private link and password which allow you to access the film online. We will provide a beautiful website, custom-made with your own branding and a high-quality video player from Vimeo. You can share the virtual event with your community in one of three ways:
Your audience can register with you (by email, for example), and you can share the link and password with your audience, allowing them to view the concert remotely from their homes.
You can host a Zoom (or similar) event, introduce the program and talk about any upcoming programs or institutional news, and share the “digital concert hall” link and password with your viewers directly over Zoom. Viewers would then navigate to the digital concert hall page to watch the concert in hi-def video and audio (much higher quality than Zoom).
You can play the concert on a large-screen TV or projector for communal viewing. (Please follow appropriate social distancing and health regulations.)
What is the “virtual concert” experience?
Much more than just a recorded performance, “Songs of Loss and Hope” captures the live concert experience with an inviting mixture of spoken word and musical performance, following a compelling theme of art’s power to heal and bring us hope during a time of loss. To keep viewers engaged online, the film is relatively fast paced, with five separate musical performances back-to-back with spoken word, rather than one monolithic performance. “Songs of Loss and Hope” allows us to connect musically at a time when that would not otherwise be possible.
Joshua Peckins is not only an experienced concert violinist, but also a gifted public speaker. Information about the composers and their music, as well as compelling personal stories, are a frequent part of his live concerts. In “Songs of Loss and Hope,” similar stories welcome audiences into a rich and personal experience of the music.
